Die südamerikanischen Anden sind die längste Bergkette der Erde. Sie verläuft durch sieben Länder: Venezuela, Kolumbien, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivien, Chile und Argentinien. Hier findet man auch den weltgrößten aktiven Vulkan, den Ojos del Salado. Der Name bedutet "Die Augen des Salzigen", eine Anspielung auf die augenförmigen Salzablagerungen auf seinen Gletschern.
