A country’s flag can make quite a statement. In 1906, for instance, an Irishman by the name of Peter O’Connor won a silver medal at the Olympics, but was forced to compete for England. In protest, he climbed a 20-foot flagpole and waved the Irish flag atop it. Irish and Irish-American athletes actually fought off guards at the bottom in order to let the Irishman’s protest continue.
