Many of the celebrations associated with Chinese New Year, including drums, fireworks and wearing the colour red, developed in order to scare of a monster. The ferocious ‘Nian’ was said to wait to the first day of the year to descend on villagers, and a wise old sage suggested the aforementioned celebrations as a tactic to keep Nian at bay.
