The UFP was usually depicted as an ideal society, but “Deep Space Nine” challenged that image. It introduced the Maquis, a group of resistance fighters who would rather fight to remain in their colonies than resettle within Federation space, and it added Section 31 to the Star Trek lore, a shady organisation bent on protecting the UFP at any cost.
