Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was conceived by Montgomery Ward, a department store, as a marketing gimmick to encourage children to buy holiday coloring books. Also, Rudolph was almost named Rollo or Reginald and almost didn’t have a red nose either. At the time a red nose was considered a sign of dubious health.
