You may recognize the name Queen Isabella of France. She was a French princess by birth and at age 12 through marriage became the Queen Consort of Edward II. She was a diligent student and had a education fit for a noble girl, and perhaps that helped her recognize that she had to constantly compete for her husband’s affection with his ever-changing favourites. When she decided to take things into her own hands, she travelled back to France and and invaded England with a small group of mercenaries. She overthrew her husband and put their son, Edward III, on the throne. Acting as his regent, she implemented unpopular though effective policies, and is now regarded culturally as a “femme fatale” figure.
