If you are not a fan of corsets or spinach here is exactly who to blame: Catherine de’Medici of France. In the 1550s, Catherine de’Medici was so annoyed by women with “thick waists” that she enforced a ban on them from her court. For the following 350 years, the corset enjoyed its widespread use throughout all of western civilisation. When she became queen of France in 1553, she enjoyed spinach so much that she insisted it be served at every meal. To this day, spinach dishes are sometimes referred to as “Florentine,” reflecting Catherine’s birthplace of Florence.
