Everyone’s favourite elf, Legolas Greenleaf – yes, that’s his surname – almost didn’t join the Fellowship of the Ring. In early drafts of the book, Tolkien had a different elf accompany Frodo and friends. That elf was called Glorfindel and only during the final draft did Tolkien change his mind.
