The Marquis de Sade is often credited for inventing the alarm clock, but it was in fact invented by American Levi Hutchins in New Hampshire in 1787. Hutchins constructed the first known mechanical alarm clock as a personal device to wake him at 4:00am each morning. He didn’t even have to be at work early; it was just his own rule to wake before sunrise.
