In Dante’s Il Paradiso, Beatrice leads Dante to the place where angels dwell--Primum Mobile. There, she explains the nine orders of angels, hierarchically arranged. Closest to God are the Seraphim, followed by the Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.
