The oldest words in the English include ‘I’, ‘we’, ‘two’ and ‘three’. They date back thousands of years – and maybe as much as 40,000 years old! Strangely there was a period of 300 years when the English monarchy did not speak English. The Normans took the English throne when they invaded England in 1066 and during their reign French became the mother tongue of the monarchy.
