What’s in a name? An eponym is created when a person’s name is used to make a new word. The 4th Earl of Sandwich would ask his servants to bring him pieces of meat between two slices of bread. Impressed by this concoction his friends would order ‘the same as Sandwich!’ – and thus the sandwich was born. Despite being a celebrated politician and military strategist in his day, he is still best known for inventing the humble sandwich.
