Very few words begin with the letter X (the fewest of any letter). However, it does appear quite often in math. It is used in equations to represent an unknown value and many believe this mathematical tradition stems from Rene Descartes in 1637. Because of its use in math to represent an unknown, the letter has come to represent unknowns in other situations.
