Interesting fact:

During the later Middle Ages, the letters U and V were used interchangeably as a vowel and consonant. V was mostly used if it appeared at the beginning of a word, whereas U was used in the middle or end of a word, regardless of sound. Some distinction was made between the letters later in a Gothic alphabet and this distinction was later accepted by the French Academy in 1762.
