The dog’s letter (or littera canina) is the letter R. The letter was trilled in Latin, similar to the trilling R in the Spanish word for dog, perro, and reminded speakers of a growling dog. In his play ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ William Shakespeare referenced this phenomenon when Juliet’s nurse refers to the letter R as “the dog’s name” in Act 2, scene 4.
