Advertising has always been a controversial topic when it comes to gender equality. People define themselves by gender, and as it happens with all mass media, it also has a big impact on society. Examples of this are cosmetics commercials that act as a false prototype of how to have a perfect body image. Moreover, the femininity of the women and the masculinity of the men is emphasized by advertisements underlining the difference in their gender roles. That is what Erving Goffman calls “commercial realism”.
