During a famine in 19th century France, it was explained to Queen Marie Antoinette that the peasants were protesting because they had no bread, to which she famously replied, “Let them eat cake”. It’s an outrageous anecdote, and it’s almost certainly not true – the phrase was probably attributed to her by her enemies.
