Sudoku might seem quintessentially Japanese, but it was actually the brainchild of American architect Howard Garns. He created the game in 1979 and originally called it “Number Place”. The rights were later acquired by a Japanese publisher. Garnes wouldn’t witness the success of his invention, as he passed away in 1989.
