The history of cakes goes back to ancient times. Obviously, they differed from what we see and taste today. They were more bread-like and ancient bakers used fruits and honey as a sweetener. In the Middle Ages people started baking gingerbreads that could last for many months. Our favourite birthday cake “was born” in the 15th century, when German bakers started selling cakes with sweetened dough.
