The first international game between England and Scotland was played in 1871 and contained 20 players on each team: 13 forwards, 3 half backs, 1 three quarter and 3 fullbacks. The number of players was later reduced to 15 in 1877. In the modern game, there are also a further 8 players in reserve that can be substituted during the game.
