Interesting fact:

It was in 350 AD that Pope Julius I named the 25th of December as the official birthday of Jesus. This meant that the festival took place at the same time as pagan winter celebrations which the church hoped to stamp out. Many Christmas celebrations still incorporate pagan traditions.
