Footwear is common theme in fairytales. In one version of the original Cinderella stories, the stepsisters irrevocably mangle and hack away at their own feet in order to get their trotters into the glass slipper. Yuck! No wonder they get jealous of perfect little Cindy coming along and slipping straight into the slipper with no problem.
