The clearest natural body of freshwater in the world is Nelson Lakes National Park’s Blue Lake. It is nearly as clear as distilled water. Because it is 1200 meters (3937 ft) above sea level, Blue Lake is always cold, between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius. The lake is considered by the Maori as sacred and humans are not permitted to enter the lake.
