The kiwi fruit is not native to New Zealand but originates from China. Seeds were brought to New Zealand in 1904 by Mary Isabel Fraser who had been visiting mission schools in China. New Zealand began exporting the fruit in the 1950s. Today, New Zealand is the second leading exporter of the kiwifruit behind Italy.
