Outside the polar regions, New Zealand is the last major land mass to have been settled by humans. The Māori arrived between A.D. 800 and 1200 from, according to their tradition, an island called Hawaiki, which is speculated to be the Cook Islands. The first Europeans arrived later in the 17th century.
