After campaigning persistently, the authors of "Deep Space Nine" finally managed to add the USS Defiant to the show. It was conceived as a warship – quite untypical for Star Trek. Its registry number, NX-74205, is a nod to Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod, who was born 5 February 1974.
