In-universe beaming is considered the safest way to travel. Physicists and philosophers, however, disagree. They claim that if there ever was such a thing as a transporter, it would be a suicide machine, because when you beam someone, his or her atoms are taken apart and an exact replica is assembled at the destination. The original gets destroyed in the process.
