The character of Paul Stamets, whose research is the foundation of Discovery’s spore drive, is named after real-life mycologist Paul Stamets. The idea of combining the spores with a giant moss piglet to make the ship fly got the show sued for plagiarism. Apparently, it was ripping off the computer game "Tardigrades".
