The designer of the Enterprise, Matt Jefferies, took the NC hull marking from American planes and the CCCP token of the Soviet Union and combined them into Starfleet’s NCC registry. His reasoning: "If we do anything in space, we (Americans and Russians) have to do it together." The number 1701 was chosen for its easy legibility.
