Interesting fact:

A former pilot, Matt Jefferies was the production designer of the original series and created the typical look of Star Trek. His design of the Enterprise bridge was so functional that real-life control centres of the US Navy were modelled after it. In his honour, the access tunnels on Starfleet ships are called Jefferies tubes.
