Thomas Bowdler was an editor who published an edition of Shakespeare’s plays called ‘The Family Shakespeare’. Bowdler was shocked by some of Shakespeare’s more racy passages and decided to make them more suitable for children. His name then became associated with censoring literature as well as TV and cinema.
