The first official appearance of the 100m sprint is dated back to the first modern Olympiad in Athens in 1896. The gold medal that year was won by Thomas Burke of the United States who ran it in 12 seconds. The record holder for the fastest woman in the 100m dash is Florence Griffith-Joyner of the United States who ran it in 10.49 seconds at the Olympic games in Indianapolis in 1988.
