At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the Olympic Committee introduced a new sporting event to complement the Summer Games, the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games mirror the Summer and Winter Games with events ranging from swimming to athletics, open to athletes from across the globe with a wide range of disabilities. In the very first Games, 400 athletes from 23 countries competed in 8 sports.
