Interesting fact:

The widely used chalkboard evolved from a single slate, that students used to write down their lessons. The wipe able board was cheaper and easier to obtain than paper. In fact, slate was so easy to come by, most pupil used to write with lighter, softer slate pencils, rather than chalk. Today chalkboards are mostly made porcelain enamel.
