Interesting fact:

Buoyant safety devices made from wood or cork were used by Norwegian seamen for a while. You could buy a life jacket as early as 1804. The lifesaving equipment was advertised in the October 1804 issue of The Sporting Magazine. It wasn’t until 50 years later that life jackets made from cork were issued to workers in the lifesaving services.
