The first steel Ferris wheel was built for the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. The organizers were looking for a big attraction to outshine the Eiffel tower. The Ferris wheel was the biggest and most daring of the time, however the idea of a circular fun ride was not new. Before George W. G. Ferris came along, many carnivals had small handturned wooden wheels.
