One out of five people in South Korea go by the surname Kim. About 15 % of the population go by Lee and almost every tenth person goes by Park. Until 1997, when the article was ruled unconstitutional, two people with the same surname were not allowed to be married. This restriction was based on the fact that having the same surname meant having the same ancestral home.
