Spelling bees actually started out as a teaching device in American schools. Educators would ask their students to spell words to improve their vocabulary and grammar. During the 19th century students frequently spelled out loud and competed to be the best speller in the class. By the 1840s Midwest communities started holding spelling matches which turned into the annual spelling bees we have today.
