Silhouette cuttings were incredibly popular among the aristocrats in France but less so with the common people. In fact, while the Lords and Ladies were eating like kings, the people were starving and, to protest against the hypocrisy, many peasants wore only black to mimic these black paper cutouts: “We are shadows, too poor to wear color. We are silhouettes!”
