The Amazon river located in South America is the largest river in the world! That means it is the river that holds the greatest volume of water. For a long time the Nile was assumed to be the longest river in the world – it extends an unbelievable 4,160 miles (6,695km) in length. But in fact, it is now accepted that the Amazon also wins that prize! It wasn’t until 1971 that the source of the Amazon was discovered in the Andes of Peru.
