The original creator of the “Emoticon” – where facial expressions were created with punctuation marks – is not a fan of the emoji. In an interview with The Independent, Scott Fahlman remarked on the emojis: “I think they are ugly, and they ruin the challenge of trying to come up with a clever way to express emotions.”
