This play was considered to be one of Euripides’ very greatest tragedies, though it was deemed to gory to study in Western civilization to study for centuries. It was the philosopher Nietzsche he brought it up for consideration again in the late 19th century. It is unique in Greek tragedies in that a god is featured as one of the main characters, not just operating things behind the scenes.
