The creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Shona Rhimes, was originally going to set the series in her hometown of Chicago. But she went for Seattle because E.R. was based in Chicago. Rhimes was obsessed with watching surgical shows on the Discovery Channel and they provided her with the inspiration to write the first season.
