Do you know where the word ‘bee’ in spelling bee comes from? Historically ‘bee’ was used to describe when communities met-up to get something done. A ‘husking bee’ was when a group would meet to husk corn together. And in Middle English ‘been’ or ‘bean’ meant ‘help given by neighbors’. Over time it came to mean a group meeting or competition – and the spelling bee emerged!
