A word made by joining together two words is called a ‘portmanteau’ – in the 19th Century this was the name for a suitcase with two compartments. It was first used by Lewis Carroll, the author of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, who described it as “two meanings packed into one word”. Common portmanteaus include motorcycle, taxicab and cheeseburger.
