Have you ever heard the term ‘crocodile tears’? We use it when someone seems insincerely emotional – crying tears when they’re not actually sad. The expression is very old and become popular in Ancient Rome. It stems from an old wife’s tale which says that crocodiles cry for their victims as they are eating them. In fact crocodiles do cry but only to stop their eyes from becoming too dry rather than because they’re emotional!
