The film is set in 1958, 20 years before the actual release date on 1st June 1978. Carrie Fisher was considered for the role of Sandy, but then Olivia Newton John was auditioned after John Travolta asked her himself. Olivia insisted on having a screen test with John Travolta to determine if they had on-screen chemistry.
