Oliver Cromwell fought against the monarchy during the English civil war. He became the Protector of Britain after the monarchy was abolished in 1649 making him the most powerful person in the country during this time. He was nicknamed ‘Old Ironsides’ due to his strict discipline and military prowess. After his death, the royalists came back to power and restored the monarchy.
