Queen Isabella of Valois married Richard II at the age of 6 as part of a peace deal between France and England. In medieval times royal brides were often children, or even babies, but the couples would not begin living together as husband and wife until they were older. Isabella and Richard maintained a respectful friendship and when he died in 1400 she became a widow – at the age of 10!
