Do you know what a mondegreen is? It’s when you mishear a song lyric as something completely different. Author Sylvia Wright came up with it after mishearing a Scottish ballad, she heard the line ‘…and laid him on the green’ as ‘…and Lady Mondegreen’. A famous example is mishearing the hymn lyric ‘Gladly the cross I’d bear’ as ‘Gladly the cross-eyed bear’.
